How to choose the perfect sharpener for you.
If you’ve ever gone shopping for pencil sharpeners, you’ll know there are so many different kinds of sharpeners to choose from. Even here on Pencils.com, we have over 10 different sharpeners.
Here are a couple of “points” to help you find the best sharpener for you.
Looking to stay extra sharp?

Long Point Sharpeners
Long point sharpeners are great for getting the most out of your sharpening. Because long point sharpeners help expose more graphite, the resulting points offer more writing/sketching/drawing per sharpening. These are some of the long point sharpeners we have to offer.
KUM Masterpiece Sharpener
Blackwing Long Point Sharpener (Black / White)
KUM 1-Hole Long Point
Are you sharpening on the go?
Pencil Shaving Reservoir
When sharpening your pencil on the go, sometimes it is ideal to have a sharpener with a shaving reservoir to keep your shavings from making a mess. Here are some easy to carry sharpeners with shaving reservoirs.
Blackwing Long Point Sharpener (Black / White)
KUM Elipse Sharpener (Ice / Black)
Compact size

These sharpeners don’t have a reservoir, but they are super compact and easy to carry.
M+R Granate Sharpener
KUM Softie Grip
KUM 1-Hole Long Point
Sharpening at a desk?

The Dahle 133 Rotary Sharpener is a workhorse of a sharpener. As you go through this list, you’ll probably see this sharpener pop up a few times.
Collectible Desktop Sharpeners
A great gift for executives, the Caran d’Ache Sharpening Machine is Swiss-made and built to last.
Caran d’Ache Sharpening Machine (Limited Edition Matterhorn)
Looking to sharpen non-graphite pencils? (Coloring pencils or charcoal pencils?)
As previously stated, the Dahle 133 is a good all-around pencil sharpener. One of the great features of this pencil is that it has an adjustable point when sharpening, preventing any over-sharpening of soft cores like wax and charcoal.
Have an irregular sized pencil?
Jumbo Sharpeners

If you’re looking for a jumbo sharpener, the following pencil sharpeners will get the job done.
Dahle 133 Rotary Sharpener
KUM Jumbo Sharpener
KUM Ice Dome-Lid 2 Hole Sharpener
KUM Softie 2 Hole Magnesium Sharpener
KUM 4-in-1
Faber-Castell 9000
Triangular Pencils
Most standard sized triangular pencils can work in almost any standard sharpener, however, jumbo triangular pencils like the Koh-I-Noor Triograph may be troublesome. Thankfully, the Dahle 133 is up for the task.
Carpenter Pencil
Carpenter pencils are usually sharpened using a utility knife or blade, however, there is one sharpener that will nicely sharpen most standard carpenter pencils.

What about sharpeners for lead holders?
Oh my how can I forget! The only one we have at the moment is the Dahle 2mm Lead pointer.
Is the Matterhorn special edition actually larger than the standard Caran d’Arche sharpener, or is it just an optical illusion?
Thank you, patrick
Hey Pat, I think it’s just a bit of angles and forced perspective. They are pretty much the same size. I will see if I can get the photo redone to make up for that! Thanks for pointing that out 🙂
oops, was supposed to be Patrick on the prior question , not patruck . . . . fat fingers, I guesss
What about sharpeners for lead holders?
I have a carpenters pencil sharpener that looks like an oversized compact sharpener. But it did not work at all.
