Old Time Music Making a Comeback

Old Crow Medicine Show’s music is a blend of Old Time music with the stage presence of a hard hitting rock act. It’d be difficult to find a band in contemporary music who has so successfully amalgamated the roots music of America’s past. With uptempo rhythms, banjo and fiddle, and vocal harmonies, Old Crow Medicine Show has produced something both authentic and original, making the Old Time new.

“American folk music is a collection of all of the stories of all of the people of America, and it’s not exclusive.”-Ketch Secor

Recording since 1998, the band has performed for audiences all over the country and gained a loyal fanbase in the process. Busking their way to the top, this band was discovered performing outside of a drugstore by the legendary Doc Watson of Country music fame. Street performing, or Busking, has contributed to the out in the open sound of the band. It seems they are a band with nothing to hide, just great music for all to hear.

OCMS is best known for taking the unfinished Bob Dylan song “Wagon Wheel” and turning it into a cult classic. The song was recently re-recorded by Darius Rucker and transformed into a Billboard Hot 100 hit.

Over the years, they have grown, and some members have gone on to other projects. The band’s previous frontman,Willie Watson, will be performing at a special Blackwing Sessions concert during the Blackwing Experience, hosted by Palomino in late June. Tickets for the concert, which will also feature Andrew Combs and Willy Tea Taylor, can be purchased here.

In related news, the band has rejoined with its longtime member, Critter Fuqua. Critter had taken a hiatus from the band to go to college, and has rejoined them on tour, bringing new vitality to this already energetic group of players.

Old Crow Medicine ShowOld Crow Medicine Show is driven by many things, but mostly a love for traditional music and the stories it tells. The Charleston City Paper recently called the band, “A Bluegrass Powered Locomotive.” In the interview, Ketch Secor, a founding member, was also quoted as saying, “American folk music is a collection of all of the stories of all of the people of America, and it’s not exclusive.” Proving that their drive as artists is to tell the story of people across the country from diverse walks of life.

The band’s most recent tour has been going well, selling out dozens of venues as they promote their newest album, “Carry Me Back.” To see the latest news from the road, follow Old Crow Medicine Show on Twitter.
