3D Drawing, Printing Brings Art to Life
Recently, The Huffington Post reported that scientists at Oxford are using 3D printing to create artificial human tissue.
Simply put, the applications for 3D printing are only beginning to be discovered, and artists as well as scientists are hard at work making good use of this new technology.
Although, TechCrunch reported in late March 2013 that 3D printers could drop under the $2,000 dollar range by 2016, the price point is still too high for most consumers. Chances are, with 3D printers still out of the average consumers price range, most of us won’t have access to 3D printers capable of serious production anytime soon.

“3D Drawing” Tools
The 3Doodler
Nonetheless, that’s not stopping startups like The 3Doodler from making gains in what may seem like a niche market. They’re also trying to make it more affordable.
The 3Doodler’s promo video asks the question, “What if you could draw things exactly as you imagined them?” Certainly, The 3Doodler allows you to do just that, taking what would normally be a sketch and making it a physical object.
After launching an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign, Peter Dilworth and Max Bogue have created, “The world’s first 3D printing pen.” You can even pre-order a pen now for only $99. While it’s little more than a tool that allows you to melt and bend plastic into shapes, they’ve told a compelling story. This may quickly become a great option for hobbyists and artists interested in “3D Drawing.”

Doodle 3D
Not to be outdone, another company Doodle 3D is launching its own campaign to make 3D drawing as simple as a flick of the finger on an iPad or tablet. Its simplicity is its greatest strength, and Doodle 3D aims to put 3D printing at its users fingertips.
Boasting a more intuitive approach, Doodle 3D has made it possible to turn a simple sketch into an actual object. Imagine that?
Doodle 3D’s Kickstarter campaign has been equally successful, and it’s no doubt that they will easily reach the funding needed to advance their product.

One thing is clear. People are taking their creativity into their own hands in ways we’ve never seen before. Thingaverse has made it possible for people to pool together their resources and give users a foundation for new projects of their own. With 3D drawing and printing taking new forms and becoming more affordable, as well as more user friendly, we can only expect to see this new technology continue to advance.
But can anything overtake the humble pencil?
